Onsemi will supply EliteSiC chips to Magna which will install them in eDrive systems.

Magna said the semiconductors would be used to improve cooling performance and boost acceleration as well as shortening charging time. EVs “could” also have a longer range.

The Tier 1 supplier said the silicon carbide (SiC) technology coupled with Onsemi ability to rapidly increase output as needed would streamline its supply chain.

“Our technology enables increased power density and higher efficiency in traction inverters, resulting in improved [efficiency] without compromising driving dynamics and safety,” claimed Onsemi’s Asif Jakwani.

Magna is spending US$40m on SiC equipment for Onsemi factories in New Hampshire, US and the Czech Republic.

“A secure supply of silicon carbide chips will be critical to our ability to continue delivering…. eDrive systems to customers,” said Magna Powertrain chief Diba Ilunga.

“We are both investing to increase SiC capacity for long term chip supply.”
