Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 570 in Q2 2023, versus 1,253 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 10% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that NVIDIA filed the most robotics patents within the automotive industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 14 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 14 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Robert Bosch Stiftung with 13 robotics patent filings, Alphabet (12 filings), and Ford Motor (11 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 62% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 62%, followed by China (22%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by the US was 20% higher than the 42% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
