BASF is claiming to be the first company to establish battery materials manufacturing and recycling centres on the same site.
It has opened the first cathode active materials production plant in Germany while the recycling plant will produce black mass.
Proprietary production technologies will allow a “significantly reduced” carbon footprint for cathode active materials.
The new facility is in Schwarzheide, Germany.
The new plant is also the first fully automated large-scale cathode active materials production facility in Europe, is “fully sold out” for the next years and will supply products tailored to the specific needs of cell manufacturers and automotive OEMs in Europe.
BASF plans additional investments for cathode active materials in Europe and “is in advanced negotiations with customers”.
The two new plants will add about 180 jobs.
